Ecology of Bedbugs and it's activities

Bed bugs fit in to the family of insects called as Cimicidae. All insects in this family will get the blood needed for them from anyone for their survival and reproduction. Lot of correlated species were exists in this family which feed on birds, bats and other animals. Cimex lectularius is the commonly known bed bug which is widely spread all over the world. These species were adapted to living with humans. An immature bedbug undergoes 5 developmental phases before attaining maturity. In each and every stage, a blood meal is needed. When speaking about temperature the complete development of bedbug happens at 70-90°F. Complete development means growing from egg to adult in 1.5 - 2 months. Chilly weather and shortage of blood meal may lengthen the growth duration of bedbug. The life span of a bedbug is less than a year. The female bedbugs will lay 5 eggs in each day in various places. A female bedbug may lay up to 500 eggs in its lifetime.

Bed bugs are insects that will feed in night times and lifestyle of a bedbug is hiding in a place after a blood meal and will come out only for next feeding. So, bed bugs are often present for weeks or even months before the identification of single bug. Bedbugs hide in fissures and gaps present in bed frames, head boards, mattresses and box springs. Also, they will go away from the bed and be able to survive amid or underneath floorboards, carpeting, under decorative moldings, in or under furniture, behind picture frames, etc. The bites of bedbug will not pain and often go unnoticed.

Bed bugs are entirely varied from all other blood feeding pests such as mosquitoes, fleas, etc. All males and females bedbugs, as well as all bugs that are in immature stages, feed on blood. After feeding blood, they went back to their concealed places for taking rest. Without food (Blood meal), bed bugs can survive for many. It has been reported that bed bugs can live up to one year or more without feeding.
