Everything You Need to Know About Garden Moles

Late winter and early spring are the most active times for garden mole activity. If you start to notice mole hills popping up around your property, now is the time to protect your home and ensure these pests don’t wreak havoc on you this season. First, contact your pest removal company and read on to learn all you need to know about these typical Canadian pests.

The first sign of a mole problem.

The most obvious sign of moles are molehills popping up around your yard. As they burrow through the soil below and carve a path, they throw up dirt onto the surface. If you start to see mounds of dirt suddenly appear in your garden or yard, you’ve got a mole problem.

What do moles look like?

Pocket gophers and moles are often confused for one another, but they require two different types of treatment by pest control. Moles are cylindrical with dense brown fur and are about 6 inches long.Their front paws are unmistakably large and wide and are meant for digging through soil and mud.

What attracts moles to your yard?

Moles feast on insects beneath the soil, and are attracted to yards that have plenty of insects to choose from. Landscaping elements such as planted shrubs and trees are also attractive elements for moles as they seek them out to eat the insects that are living in their root systems.

When is the active season for moles?

Their prime breeding season runs from February through June. A female will have three or four young in a nest built underground. Outside the breeding season, moles lead largely solitary lives, so all the mole activity in a small garden is likely to be due to a single animal.

What makes moles so disruptive?

Moles are imperative to their ecosystems as they aerate the soil and reduce the number of invasive insects. However, there are various reasons that the presence of moles is unwanted. First, they create an underground tunnel system in your yard and garden that can kill plants and seedlings from vegetables. This makes successful gardening impossible. Second, they can create opportunities for other moles to inhabit their tunnel system should one die.
